Child Sexual Exploitation
You may be aware of the recent storyline in Coronation Street about grooming and Child Sexual Exploitation. The storyline involves a young character called Bethany Platt who is being exploited by an older man, Nathan Curtis. It’s a powerful example of how grooming can take place over a long period, often within an abusive relationship in which organised sexual abuse involves one or more abuser.
Many people are talking about the storyline – especially in the media and on social media – and you may be having your own conversations with your own children about how we to protect themself.
It’s important that we are all aware of what Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is, the possible signs and how to report it. Keeping our children safe is a high priority for us, the council and we are proud to be working with our partners across the city and county to raise awareness of CSE and tell local people what the signs of abuse look like and report abuse if they see it.
Please see advice on CSE on the police website here: https://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice/cse
Nottingham City Council also has information on abuse, details of helplines to call and advice on how to stay safe, here: http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/children-and-families/safeguarding-children-board/information-for-children-and-young-people-parents-and-carers/
